Expansion Of Existing Data Center

The Client

For more than 130 years, the Chubb Group of Insurance Companies has been delivering exceptional property and casualty insurance products and services to businesses and individuals around the world.

Today, they are the 12th largest property and casualty insurer in the United States and have a worldwide network of some 120 offices in 26 countries staffed by 10,200 employees.

The Chubb Corporation reported $50.4 billion in assets and $13.9 billion in revenues in 2013. According to Fortune magazine, Chubb is the 202nd largest U.S.-based corporation.


The Brief

"Chubb Insurance required their existing Data Center at their London headquarters to increase cooling capacity by 30kW whilst offering the best energy-savings."

"The existing Data Center was on the 8th floor of a Victorian London City building with restricted access and a prohibitively shaped Data Center room with a blocked floor void and low ceilings."

"Their was no redundancy in the Data Center and the client required N+1 rating with the upgrade."

The Cooling Solution

In order to achieve the upgrade to the existing Data Center and meet the tough criteria of the brief, QCooling's engineers designed the solution around 11 x 42U CL20 C8 Rear Door coolers which were fitted onto a mixture of existing cabinets via the ColdLogik interface frame and USpace 6210 ColdLogik compliant server cabinets.

Because the client required the pipe work to run through their offices to the Data Center at high level, they opted for the additional security and peace of mind that the patented Leak Prevention System which complements the ColdLogik Rear Door cooler solution in many scenarios.

As the Data Center had no viable floor void the pipework was fitted overhead. The Rear Door coolers were connected to a 90KW free cooler and chiller via the LPS. The chiller and free cooler were installed onto the roof of the 8 story office block which required the road to be closed for the crane to lift the external plant into place.

The installation was completed on time and within budget without any downtime to the existing Data Center operation.

A small Room Management System RMS was included to ensure the client had full control and remote access of the newly commissioned cooling solution which in turn offered them for the first time in their Data Center N+1 redundancy.

The completed installation fulfilled the clients brief giving them an increased cooling capacity of 30kW plus the free cooling unit ensures around 75% energy savings throughout the year.
